The National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology (NIFFT) is a fully residential Government of India co-educational institute located in the mineral-rich belt of India in the town of Ranchi.
It was established in 1966 by the Government of India in collaboration with UNDP - UNESCO to provide qualified engineers and specialists for running Foundry and Forge industries. The objectives of the Institute have broadened to meet the present need of the industries, with the introduction of departments of Manufacturing Engineering (ME) and Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME).
NIFFT activities include teaching, training, research and development, consultancy and documentation and information retrieval services in manufacturing engineering and industrial metallurgy and it is one among those collage which have 100% placements.

NIFFT is registered as a Society under the Indian Societies Registration Act of 1860. The management of the Institute is vested with a Board of Governors with a chairman at its apex and members representing the Government of India (Ministry of HRD and Industry), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), private and public enterprises, technical and R&D institutions. The institute received technical and financial assistance during its formative period in the form of UNESCO fellowships, experts services, and laboratory equipment.
NIFFT has the following departments:
The institute computer facilities are DEFORM, PROCAST, UNIGRAPHICS, CATIA, AUTODESK Inventor Professional (Mechanical and Elecrical), MATLAB, servers, desktops, workstations and terminals. Software includes C, C++, Visual Studio, Developer, Turbo PASCAL, FORTRAN 77, AUTOCAD2000, QUEST, MICROSTATION MODULAR, Pro-E,and ANSYS. The internet is available via a leased line.
The institute houses laboratories such as Sand Laboratory, Metallography Laboratory, Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) Laboratory, Non-Destructive and Mechanical Testing Laboratories, Spectroscopy Laboratory, Environmental Monitoring and Pollution Control Laboratory, Metrology Laboratory, and a Forging Laboratory.
There is an Information Technology centre (I.T.C)and a Computer Center.
The workshops have facilities for Heat Treatment, Casting, Forging, Pattern and Die Manufacture.
The Department of Foundry Technology has a Sand Laboratory for testing of sands and binders, and a Foundry Workshop for melting, moulding and casting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys.
The Department of Forge Technology has a Forge workshop, Forge Laboratories and Heat treating facilities which includes a Fluidized Bed Furnace, a Muffle Furnace and a Glow bar Furnace.
The Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering has laboratories for metallography, chemical analysis, spectro-photometry, mechanical testing, non-destructive testing, pollution control and monitoring, x-ray diffractometry, induction heating, direct reading emission spectroscopy and image analysis.
The Department of Manufacturing Engineering has Pattern and Machine shops, Metrology,Rapid Prototyping Lab,Foundry Shop,Forge Shop,Die Design Center, Flexible Manufacturing System, Electronics, CAD, Welding and Electrical Laboratories.
The four-storeyed library collection includes 52000 books, 3560 bound volumes and 215 periodicals in manufacturing, metallurgy, materials science and allied areas. It has CD-ROMs, Standards publications both Indian and foreign, technical films, tapes, slides, microfilms, and microfiches. OPAC facility to the user through the software 'LIBSYS" is also available. The Institute has entered into an understanding with the International Library and Cultural Center, Ranchi.
NIFFT courses have a focus on Manufacturing Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering. The programmes and courses offered are changing as NIFFT evolves into a full fledged engineering institute from the earlier focus on foundry and forge technologies.
The Institute conducts educational programmes leading to Advanced Diploma (ADC), Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), Master of Technology (M.Tech.)in the following areas:
